In our world, everyone hopes that we as leaders know what we are doing! At times we do and at other times we hope to. For me, the moments I make mistakes are opportunities for true leadership to shine through. Because in fact, it is not in the mistakes that matter; it is how we handle our mistakes.
Face it…”crap happens.” We have to find the learning potential to move on. When we get hooked in a mistake or disappointment, we suck our own energy and gain no return.
Changing your perspective is the trick. My suggestion: ask yourself a question that shifts you. I personally love these:
- What about this will be funny in 5 years?
- What about this is helpful to get me where I need to go next?
- What do I want to do differently now?
Sometimes taking action in a new productive direction restarts your momentum. The easiest action to take is to smile! Shrug your shoulders, take a walk. Clear your head. Come back to the problem with a fresh perspective and remember that other old saying: "If at first you don’t succeed…try, try again!"
P.S. Feedback always welcome! Let me know how you're taking action in a new direction. And remember…smile!
